About the Work
2026 - The Year The Sun Melted presents a fractured view of London during a summer of extreme heatwaves. Captured from the vantage point of the South Bank looking across the Thames toward Westminster Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, and Big Ben, the artwork transforms a global seat of political power into a destabilised landscape of impending environmental collapse.
In the centre of the composition, a vivid yellow sun melts down a starkly divided canvas - split between distressed royal blue and deep crimson tones. Below, an isolated amber traffic light cuts through the disrupted cityscape, flashing an amber, unyieldingly warning: "slow down, stop".
Technically, the piece moves continuously between analogue texture and digital manipulation. Built on personal photography and urban observation, the work layers scanned photos, sketches, custom textures, and print production aesthetics with bespoke digital brushes to capture a melting city held in permanent tension.
Artist Note
"This piece almost did not happen. The initial concept began in late May, but in July, my bag was stolen along with my main iPad, camera, and backup drives containing the original project files. I had to rebuild the artwork entirely from discarded variations and saved snippets I hadn't emptied from the bin, finally completing it on 15 September.
It was a devastating setback, but seeing it make it all the way to Tokyo for my first international exhibition makes the entire journey worth it. Thank you to The Holy Art Gallery for the opportunity and patience."
